What is the main function of the cell membrane in all cells.
The cell membrane is a semi-permeable membrane. Meaning that it allows only certain types of substances to enter it. It is made up of a phospholipid bilayer studded with various protein receptors and gates to react to substances that attach to it and control the entry of substances in it. The function of cell membrane are the following:
- Control movement of substances - Some substances like water can freely flow in and out of the cell through osmosis. Other substances require channels like potassium or sodium.
- Protection of the cell - The cell membrane is the boundary of the cell (with exception to plants, bacteria, and fungi which have cell walls) to the other environment. This protects the cell itself from taking in harmful compounds or foreign objects.
- Attachment to adjacent cells - Cell membranes also serve as attachments to other cell membranes. This keeps the tissue intact, an added bonus is that it allows the cell to communicate with other cells adjacent to it by allowing signals to be sent from one cell to another. The cell membrane also serves as an attachment point for any receptors that may come from the environment of the cell.
